Tao Te Ching Chapter 76-1 Soft life

Today's Tao

The life of man is soft and weak. (Ch.76)

The expression "soft and weak" suggests being intangible.

Why is the life of man intangible?

Because it is part of a hologram.

What is life, then?

To answer the question, movie is a perfect metaphor.

A movie does not exist as a tangible entity.

A movie is a story told on the screen where a sequence of numerous photographs is projected.

The life of man is a movie.

As the name of "movie" is given to a sequence of projected images, "life" is the name of a collection of holograms.

Technically speaking, a hologram does not change as an individual image in a film does not change.

The sequence of holograms gives us an impression that it changes.

Check

-Life does not exist as a tangible entity.

-A hologram does not change.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-4 Value life?

Today's Tao

Surely, those who do nothing by living are better than those who value life. (Ch.75)

You respect your life as a painted rice-cake, that is to say, a hologram and catalyst.

Perfect!

You value your life a little.

All right.

You value your life a lot and try to achieve the maximum in there.

Lao Tzu might say: "Oh, my god! Surely, you have got a problem".

If you try to control your life, you will certainly be stuck in there.

No act in Life is better than doing nothing.

That's what Lao Tzu is saying.

Besides, we have to learn that, no matter what we do, we are doing nothing in our hologram, which we call Life.

Remember?

No matter what we do, we are sending Love.

Likewise, no matter what they do, they are sending Love to you.

All right?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-3 Plenty of life?

Today's Tao

People think lightly of ending life because they demand plenty of life. That's why they think lightly of ending life. (Ch.75)

Life is just a hologram. It is just a painted rice-cake.

It exists as a catalyst to stimulate you to emit more Love (=Tao).

To satisfy your hunger for life, all you can do is to send more Love.

Or rather, we have to learn that, whatever we do, we are always sending Love.

That's why Tozan Ryokai 洞山良价 [Tung-shan Liang-chieh / Dongshan Liangjie] said:

"I am always doing this desperately."

(聯燈會要 [rento eyo] Book 20 / Dogen quoted this in his «Shobogenzo» as shown yesterday)

If everyone is sending Love, "No one can ever do anything evil. Everyone is doing the right thing", right?

"A painted rice-cake / Gabyo 画餅", a hologram, or life is a catalyst.

It is you who satisfy your hunger by sending Love.

Whether you still want a life of plenty or plenty of life, your life is asking you to do the same thing.

Send Love.

Respect your life, or your sweet piece of painted rice-cake.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-2 King & Zen Master Dogen

Today's Tao

It's difficult to govern people because their king does something. That's why it's difficult to govern them. (Ch.75)

Zen Master Kyogen Chikan 香厳智閑 [Hsing-yen Chih-hsien / Xiangyan Zhixian] said:

"a painted rice-cake cannot satisfy hunger."

Of course, not. We cannot eat the picture of a rice-cake... Wait a minute!

Master Dogen said:

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, it must not be a remedy to satisfy hunger."

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

Didn't he? (☞See Painted rice-cake / Empty granary 53-5)

Can a painted rice-cake satisfy hunger?

Or, can it not?

Dogen answers the question with some key phrases in Zen.

"A painted rice-cake cannot satisfy hunger" is like saying:

"No one can ever do anything evil. Everyone is doing the right thing. (Don't do anything evil. Practice all the good things.) 諸悪莫作、衆善奉行 [shoaku makusa, shuzen bugyo]",

"Where on earth did this «what on earth» thing come from? 是什麼物恁麼来 [ze inmo butsu inmo rai]",

and

"I am always doing this desperately. 吾れ常に是に於いて切なり [ware tsuneni koreni oite setsu nari]".

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

Did you get Master Dogen's teachings?

You are the king in your hologram.

If you do something, everything is difficult.

If you do nothing, everything is easy.

[Note]
"I am always doing this desperately." 吾れ常に是に於いて切なり / 吾常於此切 [ware tsuneni koreni oite setsu nari], originally mentioned by Tozan Ryokai (807-869) 洞山良价 [Tung-shan Liang-chieh / Dongshan Liangjie].

Tao Te Ching Chapter 75-1 Tax & Starve

Today's Tao

People starve because their king taxes them too much. That's why they starve. (Ch.75)

A: "Right on, Lao Tzu! People are starving because the king taxes us too much! You, too, Master Bonbon. You are asking us too much money. We've got no money left! We've got no bread to eat!"

B: "Don't ask a religious organization to feed you. You, people, are the ones who feed us. Besides, if you don't have bread, eat pancakes or French brioche."

Neither pancakes nor brioche will satisfy their hunger.

Zen Master Dogen would give them the pictures of «a painted rice-cake / Gabyo 画餅».

"If it is not a painted rice-cake, it must not be a remedy to satisfy hunger."

(Gabyo 画餅, «Shobogenzo»)

That is to say, if it is not a hologram, it cannot be a catalyst to stimulate you.

It is just asking you to send more Love.

So are taxes and starvation.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-6 Carved or uncarved block

Today's Tao

If you carve wood on behalf of Big's carpenter, you surely hurt your hand. (Ch.74)

Don't try to carve "an uncarved block".

That is to say, don't try to control Tao and its holograms.

Let the carpenter of the holograms do his work.

In Zen Buddhism, they wisely call them Inmo butsu 恁麼物, or "what on earth" thing. (☞See Inmo and No mind 49-10)

Let your hologram come and go.

Surely you will hurt your hand if you try to control something uncontrollable.

You will feel you are stuck in the world because you forget that this life is your hologram.

If you cannot help feeling that you are lost in Mayoi, don't worry.

This Mayoi, or being lost, is Satori itself.

Your life itself is Satori the enlightenment.

Do you have to carve something already perfect?

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-5 Big's carpenter

Dear Tao friends,

Thank you for your patience, and let's resume our journey of Taoism.

Now we are reading the final chapters of Tao Te Ching, and let's cherish every bit of them.

One sentence a day (without Saturdays and Sundays) as if we were finishing the final pieces of chocolate.

Naoto Matsumoto

Today's Tao

If you end life on behalf of those who are in charge of ending life, it is like carving wood on behalf of Big's carpenter. (Ch.74)

"Big's carpenter" means Tao's carpenter. (☞See Big 25-9)

Tao is not supposed to be carved. It is an uncarved block. (☞See Thick 15-8 and Uncarved block 28-12)

Would you like to be a carpenter to carve Tao? In other words, would you like to intervene the natural course of Tao by trying to influence your holographic "life"?

We have precious pieces of advice by Zen Master Dogen if we want to detach ourselves from life.

"If you have Buddha between the beginning of life and the end of it, there is neither the beginning of life nor the end of it."

"If you don't have Buddha between the beginning of life and the end of it, you will not be lost between the beginning of life and the end of it."

「生死の中に仏あれば生死なし」

「生死の中に仏なければ生死にまどはず」

(Shoji 生死, «Shobogenzo»)

Get lost in life.

Lost completely.

Being lost in Mayoi is Satori.

You will find Buddha's love while lost in the life of Mayoi.

But, if it is too painful for you, remember that your life is just a hologram and catalyst.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-4 Reincarnation

Today's Tao

There are always those who are in charge of ending life, and they end their life. (Ch.74)

What is reincarnation?

It is the circulation of Tao's energy with the constant emission of holograms.

Our own self is part of a hologram.

There is no such a thing as life.

So, there is no such a thing as the end of life.

Life, its end, and Self are all just names.

That's why Lao Tzu says in the very first chapter of Tao Te Ching:

"If you can name something, the word does not stand for what it really is."

(☞See A name can't 1-2)

Time is just a concept.

That's why Zen Master Dogen says:

"A pine tree is time. A bamboo tree is time."

(Uji 有時, «Shobogenzo»)

The beginning and the end take place simultaneously.

[Note]
Kitaro Nishida 西田幾多郎 said: "(One can find his true Self) by eliminating your false self. In Christianity, it is called reincarnation. ☞The idea of reincarnation fascinated this "extraordinary" Japanese novelist. Yukio Mishima finished the forth and last novel of the series «Sea of Fertility» before he committed seppuku. The soul of the hero in the series is reincarnated three times, but the forth reincarnation does not take place although the person himself desperately tries to believe that he is the reincarnated one. In the 1st book «Spring Snow» the hero is born as an aristocrat. In the 2nd, «Runaway Horses» he is reincarnated as a modern Samurai swordsman. In the 3rd, «The Temple of Dawn», as a Thai princess. In the 4th, «The Decay of the Angel», the hero marries an ugly woman who believes that her beauty is a threat to the society.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-3 Fear of End

Today's Tao

If people are always afraid of the end of life, I can arrest those who do something strange and end their life. Who dares? (Ch.74)

Don't be fooled by strange stories.

"After the decomposition of your body, your soul goes to the sea of eternity."

Has anyone told you something like that?

Watch out!

Those who say something strange as this are worth being arrested, Lao Tzu insists.

Zen Master Dogen repeatedly cautions us:

"We must not think that our individual spirit goes somewhere after life.

There is no such thing as the sea of eternity."

(Soku shin ze butsu 即心是仏 and Bendowa 弁道話, «Shobogenzo». ☞See also The body decomposes 16-17)

There is no such a thing as an individual spirit.

Life is like a stack of cards.

Holograms are the cards and life is a stack of them, we can think.

Life does not exist as a being.

It is a name for the combination of holograms.

If life doesn't exist, no one can scare us, telling the end of it.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-2 Don't terrify them

Today's Tao

How can you terrify them by ending their life? (Ch.74)

Reincarnation is the creation and re-creation of a hologram.

It is not the story of a child in an exotic country who speaks about his former life in the language of the exotic country, not in the language he was supposed to be using while living the former life.

Tao is the exchange of the energy.

Every time the exchange takes place, Tao creates a hologram as a catalyst.

The end of life is the end of one cycle of this process.

Another one begins simultaneously.

Life is a catalyst, that is to say, an illusion.

That's why they say in Zen Buddhism:

"不生 不滅

[fusho fumetsu]

No life. No end of life".

Do we have to be afraid of the end of a holographic catalyst?

People in the world are not terrified at all by the end of a hologram/life, Lao Tzu says.

Of course not because they are just holographic characters in your catalytic movie.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 74-1 End of Life

Today's Tao

People are not afraid of the end of life. (Ch.74)

One must not be afraid of the end of life.

Let's talk about reincarnation in this chapter.

First, I want you to forget about the stories of a boy or a girl born in India or China who remembers what he or she was doing in France or Germany a few decades ago.

Like miracle, reincarnation is everyday-life.

Reincarnation is happening right here and right now, constantly, without interruption.

Otherwise, we wouldn't exist.

Tao is creating and re-creating a hologram every moment.

The moment a hologram ends, another begins.

This is reincarnation.

What is life, then?

Life, as well as Self, is only a name you give to a part of a hologram, which is an illusion.

If life does not exist, how can the end of it exist?

☞"RIN-NE 輪廻" is the Japanese word for reincarnation. Rumiko Takahashi, one of the most successful cartoon creators in Japan, has been treating this subject repeatedly. Please look at the first Kanji / Chinese character of the expression. Rin 輪 is the same kanji for "Tenborin 転法輪", which means "turning the wheel of manifestation". Rin 輪 signifies a wheel. Ne 廻, to turn. The expression itself probably knows better than the Japanese who use it. Reincarnation is turning the wheel of Tao.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 73-9 Tao = Net

Today's Tao

Heaven's net is vast. Its mesh is not fine, but it doesn't lose any. (Ch.73)

天網恢々疏にして失せず [tenmo kaikai so ni shite shissezu]

In Japan, this is one of the best known sentences in Tao Te Ching.

What is "Heaven's net"?

It is the net of Tao's energy, which covers everything in your hologram.

In Chapter 11, Lao Tzu said: "30 spokes share one hub". (☞See 30 spokes 11-1)

In Chapter 28: "When the uncarved block scatters, it becomes vessels". (☞See Vessels 28-13)

Can you picture the images?

All of them are metaphors in order to explain the relation between Tao and a hologram, the projector and the projected.

In Buddhism, it is symbolized by the infinite light of Amida Butsu (Amitāba Buddha).

What is the infinite light, then?

It is the movement of Tao and true You.

And this is the light that projects your holographic world in the 360 degree movie theater, so to speak.

The content of the film is not important.

The light of the projector is.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 73-8 Plan

Today's Tao

It is relaxing and plans well. (Ch.73)

Heaven's Tao never rushes you.

It relaxes you.

Even if your wish is not granted immediately, don't be annoyed.

"I wonder why Amitāba Buddha (=Amida Butsu 阿弥陀仏) keeps ignoring my wishes!"

Would you like to complain about Amida Buddha's unfair treatment against you?

Tao and Buddha's wisdom, which is your true wisdom, is far wiser than our superficial intelligence.

Do you believe in coincidence?

In Tao, there is no such a thing as a coincidence.

Amida Buddha's acts are completely planned and premeditated, you see?

Well, it is not exactly right since there is no time in Tao.

But if you think Amida Buddha is choosing the best thing for you every moment of your life, isn't it easier to accept your hologram as it is?

It is an excellent thought device.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 73-7 I shin den shin / No call

Today's Tao

It doesn't call any, but they come somehow. (Ch.73)

You don't call them.

You don't even say anything.

But they will respond.

They will even come to you somehow.

It sounds like the ultimate form of non-verbal communication such as Hara gei, the belly art.

In the domain of art in Japan, particularly martial art, non-verbal communication is a must.

We call it 以心伝心 [i shin den shin], which means "by heart, transmit heart".

This is a Kanreisu (=a bar or a spring) to better understand Zen.

This Kanji / Chinese character 心 [shin] is often translated as heart or mind.

Like the English word "heart", it also signifies "the center".

The word 心 [shin] suggests the center of the mechanism.

By the mechanism, transmit the mechanism.

In this Tao/hologram mechanism, everything comes about by itself, 自然 [ji nen].

Tao Te Ching Chapter 73-6 Response

Today's Tao

It doesn't say but responds well. (Ch.73)

Lao Tzu is saying here:

"If you want to make other people hear what you are saying, you had better shut yourself up".

As usual, he is very logical.

"Heaven's Tao" is the network of communication in your hologram as well as that of energy distribution.

That is to say, your thoughts are shared by all.

The moment you think about something, the idea is transmitted to all.

Again, it is logical because there is no barrier between you and non-you.

Or rather, let's think as if we were a living radio receiver. (☞See Radio and knowing 71-2)

Technological development is a metaphor to teach us how Tao functions.

The harder you try to convince others, the more energy you waste.

Consequently, it takes longer before they respond to it.

Tao Te Ching Chapter 73-5 Heaven's Tao wins

Today's Tao

Heaven's Tao doesn't compete but wins well. (Ch.73)

In Chapter 68, Lao Tzu says:

"A true winner doesn't compete".

(☞See True winner 68-3)

In Chapter 22 and 66, he repeats twice:

"Simply he doesn't compete. That's why no one under the sky can compete with him".

(☞See Aikido 22-12 and Don't compete 66-7)

Neither a true winner nor a sage compete.

Lao Tzu gives us a little hint about the reason.

The key is the expression "Heaven's Tao".

Heaven = Hologram

So, it means that every part of your hologram has Tao's energy.

It is ridiculous to force the energy of one part to compete against that of another.

Then, what does "winning" mean?

It is to maximize the circulating energy of Tao by receiving it without resistance and sending it as much as possible.

You are always winning because you are always receiving Love and sending Love through your hologram no matter what you are doing.
